Jewellery inspired by nature and handmade in Leeds.

Red Paper House were part of the original Bird's Yard when it first started out in Leeds. They've now joined us in Sheffield too!

"Each item is handmade by Amy in her Yorkshire workshop. Hand drawn designs are laser cut, in the UK, using sustainable birch wood. The wooden shapes are hand painted and hand illustrated. All findings and finishings are ethically sourced from a UK company who visit overseas prodcution factories to ensure fair working environments."

Inspiration: Kimonos

We have lots of gorgeous vintage kimonos to choose from in the shop, Bird's sourced a variety from Japan for you to choose from (apart from the ones that somehow didn't quite make it to the rails...)

.As well as the longer kimonos, we also have a selection of haori, a shorter jacket style traditionally worn over a kimono.

New Designer - Golden Browne

The latest designer to join us here in Bird's Yard is Golden Browne, 60s inspired clothes handmade here in the UK by Nic Browne.

Nic says of her work:

"I'm inspired by the swinging sixties and make clothing for modern modettes. My garments are made using a mixture of my own designs and vintage sewing patterns. I specialise in mini skirts and dancing around my room to the Kinks."

Bird has a new obsession... vintage kimonos. We've got a lovely selection in the shop all of which are original vintage ones from Japan and come in a range of beautiful colours, fabrics and lengths.

Persephone Book Group - 4th June

The next Persephone Book Group hosted by Handpicked Books is taking place in Bird's Yard on 4th June from 6pm. This time the group will be discussing High Wages by Dorothy Whipple and everyone's welcome!

This is what Persephone Books has to say about the story they chose to republish in their range:

"It is about a girl called Jane who gets a badly-paid job in a draper’s shop in the early years of the last century. Yet the title of the book is based on a Carlyle quotation – ‘Experience doth take dreadfully high wages, but she teacheth like none other’ – and Jane, having saved some money and been lent some by a friend, opens her own dress-shop."
